How can I prevent a sunburn?
Anyone of any skin color can suffer a sunburn. We know that sunburns make us more susceptible to skin cancers later, so we need to prevent them. You can burn even on a cloudy day, and the closer you are to the equator the faster you can burn. We ask our patients to avoid the Sun between 10-3 as much as possible, wear hats with a wide brim, long sleeves whenever possible and apply and reapply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30....an SPF of 50 is even better. The best ingredients to look for are zinc and titanium. If you are in the water, sweating, toweling off, your protection is decreased and reapplication is needed. An example would be golfers reapplying sunscreen before the back nine.
